To date we have successfully attracted 15 million unique users to our portfolio of applications headed by Tap Tap Revenge, a music rhythm game that is present on 1 in every 3 iPhones and iPod touches and that was the top downloaded game on the entire platform. The company is headed by a team of seasoned entrepreneurs, Apple veterans and backed by a high profile network of angel investors including the first investors in Google, Vinod Khosla, Marc Benioff and Jeff Clavier. The Company is profitable with less than 20 employees and working hard to built the biggest musical-based social gaming network on the iPhone and other next generation mobile devices.

Tapulous is looking to hire a Design Director to manage and build our team of talented Graphic Artists and User Interface Designers. Want to set the art and design direction for the most successful iPhone game to-date, and a whole host of new games and applications to come? Tapulous’ Design Director will partner with the art & design team in the creation of the highest quality art & design work, comprised of animation, character design, environments, visual effects, static screens and motion graphics.

You will be managing a staff of internal and external/guest artists and designers, and overseeing the asset production schedule to fulfill the creative vision of each project. This is a hands-on role, and you will be splitting time between production and management tasks.

Day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Create concepts, mock-ups, wireframes, and final, polished assets
  • Encourage & manage the creative development and contribution of each member of the art & design team
  • Source and manage external contract/guest resources to supplement internal resources
  • Motivate and mentor our art & design team in best processes, procedures, and skills pertaining to production

Requirements:

  • A killer online portfolio showing a broad range of styles (2D, 3D, characters, animations, etc.)
  • Prior experience as an Art Director or Senior Artist who supervised or managed a staff of other artists & designers
  • Several years professional experience in console, mobile or online games
  • Excitement about working in a fast-moving, high-profile start-up. Your designs will usually be shipped in a matter of hours, days or weeks to millions of people. With that comes times where there are less predictable work hours, and problems that require more inventiveness to make up for somewhat fewer resources. If you have Macgyver-like tendencies, we’ll put them to good use.

Nice to have:

  • Bachelors Degree in an art-related discipline
  • Possession of an extensive understanding of the technical aspects of the creation of game art including: concept; animation; environment modeling; character modeling; texturing; lighting; and rigging.
  • Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, 3D Studio Max (or equivalents)

This job is based in our downtown Palo Alto office, which is 2 minutes walk from the Caltrain. We are surrounded by dozens of shops, restaurants, and bars. Our retail location means that fans drop in every day to say hi and sign our guest book. For employees who commute via Caltrain, we provide 3G cards to make your train time productive time.
