About Scribd:

Scribd is the largest social publishing company in the world. Since Scribd launched in March 2007, it has become one of the top 100 global websites on the Internet with more than 50 million readers each month and more than 60,000 new documents shared every day. According to the Rails 100 list of the most trafficked rails websites, Scribd is one of the largest rails website in the world: http://rails100.pbwiki.com/Alexa+Rankings.

Scribd is changing the way people discover and share original writings and documents on the Web. Our innovative document reader technology, iPaper, enables anyone to easily upload PDF, Word, PowerPoint and other document types to share on Scribd.com or embed on thousands of other websites.

Scribd is a well-financed company, backed by some of the top investors in the world, including Charles River Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, the Kinsey Hills group, Paul Graham's Y Combinator, and several well-known angel investors.

Our office is a beautiful open space with abundant natural light in San Francisco’s SOMA district. Our team is talented, passionate, motivated and fun. You'll often find us holding group brainstorming sessions, eating lunch and dinner as a team, playing winner-take-all ping-pong games and celebrating our successes along the way. We offer competitive salaries, generous equity stakes, great benefits, flexible work hours, catered lunches and dinners, and a stocked break room.

The Job:

You've read about the challenges of scaling rails, and doing it successfully requires a lot of infrastructure behind the scenes. Some of the interesting components we’ve written are: our own search engine library to search the largest single text corpus on the internet; a fuzzy text-matching system that can identify similar blocks of text; an API that’s depended on by thousands of businesses; and a document conversion system that runs on a dynamically scalable grid of over 1,000 Amazon EC2 nodes.

Scribd has a flat engineering structure that gives individuals a great deal of responsibility. As a senior developer at Scribd, you will be involved in all stages of developing the product you are working on. You'll create new product ideas and help guide the product roadmap, spec out what the next generation will look like, and implement it yourself. Because of this, we look for individuals who thrive in a less structured environment where they will work creatively and take initiative.

The Ideal Profile:

We are looking for someone with a strong engineering background who enjoys building high quality products used by millions. You’ll be programming mostly in Ruby on Rails, so experience in that environment is ideal. A good product sense, an understanding of the web 2.0 ecosystem, and strong personal initiative are essential.

Responsibilities:

End-to-end web development. Design, architect, implement, and QA new functionality for Scribd. Work creatively to solve challenging problems.

Qualifications:

·       Strong experience in Ruby on Rails
·       Strong SQL knowledge
·       Good knowledge of front-end web programming
·       2+ years work experience as a software engineer
·       Computer Science degree or equivalent experience
