Server-side Engineer

Position located in Mountain View

 

Meebo is seeking a bright, energetic, and dedicated team player who has strong, versatile computer science fundamentals and who will be a core contributor to architecting, building, and scaling Meebo's backend. You will need strong skills in application and server-side development; experience and interest in designing and building high-volume systems is a big plus. You'll be a full-time, integral member of the server developer team, reporting directly to the VP of Engineering.

The environment is fun and friendly, but it's really fast paced: schedules are measured in days not weeks and our team is obsessed with delivering the best user experience possible.

What does a Server-side Engineer do at Meebo?

  • Develops cool features for millions of users (mostly in C and C++)
  • Supports dynamic JavaScript front-end (AJAX, LightTPD modules, Jabber, etc)
  • Scales and optimizes current infrastructure (meebo.com, Meebo Me, Meebo Rooms, Meebo Platform)
  • Peer code reviews
  • Debugs interesting problems
  • Explores new technologies (Amazon S3)
  • Designs innovative systems to meet an ever growing user base
  • Has fun (guitar hero, wall ball, 4-square, enjoys an open office atmosphere)
  • Eats (Meebo provides lunch!)
  • Sleeps (couches for power naps)
  • Other random stuff that we come up with

The candidate must have:

  • 3-5+ years of C/C++ software development experience on Linux/Unix
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent)
  • Ability to communicate design decisions, code walk-throughs, bugs, (and what to have for lunch) thoroughly, clearly, and concisely
  • Ability to adapt, take critical feedback, and execute quickly on tasks
  • Experience developing in a Unix environment
  • Phenomenal debugging principles and perseverance (plus familiarity with debugging tools like gdb, strace, pstack, etc.)
  • A sense of humo(u)r =p

Big pluses:

  • Previous experience with networking technologies
  • Database fundamentals (mysql)
  • Experience with XMPP
  • Experience and interest in high performance, scalable systems
  • Familiarity with scripting (python, php, bash, etc.)
  • Experience with version control (SVN)
