Bing Nursery School is a laboratory school associated with the Department of Psychology in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. The School was established to provide a sound educational environment for young children and to offer a high quality setting for research and training in child development, with a child-centered, play-based curriculum consistent with principles of developmentally appropriate practice. The school has a professional teaching staff of 40, 30 student teachers, 100 Stanford undergraduate students working or observing in the classroom yearly, and approximately 20 researchers. There are 450 children enrolled yearly on a part-time basis. The budget for the school is over $4M per year, covered by tuition and extensive fund-raising. Over the years, the Bing School has achieved distinction both as a school and a research laboratory, and is fully NAEYC accredited.

The Director of Bing Nursery School has full responsibility for the operations of the school, running a model early childhood program (for ages 2-5), with an exceptional learning environment for the training of undergraduate and graduate students, and fostering a research laboratory setting where children and families participate in a variety of University funded research projects.  This is a full-time, twelve-month position reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration in the School of Humanities and Sciences and working closely with faculty in the Psychology Department.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

·         Maintain an environment that provides high quality services to children and families within a positive setting for observation, study, and research in child development.

·         Develop effective fund-raising efforts in close coordination with Humanities and Sciences initiatives.

·         Implement and maintain the educational programs of the Bing Nursery School with strong oversight of the program's operations.

·         Oversee public relations, admissions, human resources, facilities operations, and fiscal and budget management, supervising a staff composed of an Assistant Director, Business Manager, support staff, professional teaching staff, students, and contingent workers.

·         Oversee the school budget in a financially sound and responsible manner.

·         Work with the Faculty Advisory Committee to set policy and strategy for the School.

·         Teach one University undergraduate course each academic quarter as a Lecturer through the Psychology Department.

·         Work with University faculty to develop and facilitate research projects at the School.

·         Support University faculty use of Bing Nursery School as a teaching facility.

·         Oversee short-term and long-term planning efforts.

·         Participate in the local and national early childhood community.

·         Guide teachers and staff in following the Bing Nursery School's tradition and practice of providing quality programs for families.

.         Oversee state licensing and NAEYC (National Ass'n for the Education of Young Children) Accreditation standards.

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS

 

·         Master's or Ph.D. in Child Development, Early Childhood Education or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Previous experience teaching at the university level preferred.

·         Minimum five years experience in Early Childhood program development and evidence of leadership in the field.

·         Demonstrated excellence in the teaching of young children.

·         Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with a diverse student body, parents, staff, teachers, faculty, and University representatives.

·         Demonstrated experience in leading, supervising, and developing teachers and staff.

·         A history of successful teaching and mentoring of teachers and staff.

·         Excellent communication and organizational skills.

·         Evidence of successful management of financial, human resources, and facilities issues in a comparable university and/or lab school setting.
